Espaco Talassa
About
Espaço Talassa, founded in 1989, is the original whale‑watching base in the Azores, nestled in Lajes do Pico on Pico Island. With a fleet of small, eco‑friendly vessels equipped with hydrophones, the expert crew leads visitors on daily excursions to spot whales, dolphins, and other marine wildlife. Trips run for three hours, beginning at 9 am or 2 pm, and include a 30‑minute multimedia briefing, free access to the base’s library and the Whalers’ Museum, and a small contribution to local re‑forestation projects. The experience combines education, ecological responsibility, and adventure. Guests learn about cetacean biology, conservation, and the history of whaling while enjoying low‑impact boat rides that minimise disturbance to the animals. Espaço Talassa’s commitment to responsible tourism is evident through its transparent pricing, downloadable permits, and programmes that benefit under‑privileged locals.
