Bica Funicular
About
The Bica Funicular, known in Portuguese as Ascensor da Bica, is a historic rail‑lift that has been whisking visitors up and down Lisbon’s steepest hill for over a century. First opened in 1892, the line climbs a 245‑metre (804‑ft) stretch at an 11.8% gradient, connecting the lower street of Rua de São Paulo with the upper corner of Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo. Today it is operated by Carris, the city’s public transport company, and is a cherished part of Lisbon’s tram heritage. The funicular was granted National Monument status in 2002, honouring its architectural significance and its role in the city’s development. Visitors enjoy a quick, scenic ride that offers panoramic views over the city’s historic centre, making it a must‑visit for anyone exploring Lisbon’s heritage and urban charm.
