The Ascensor da Glória is a historic Lisbon funicular that transports passengers from the bustling Restauradores Square to the picturesque Obelisk and Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara overlooking the city. Opened in 1909, the funicular’s 265‑metre track ascends a 17.7% gradient, offering riders sweeping panoramic views of the city’s rooftops, the Tagus River, and the distant hills of Serra de Sintra. Designed in a charming Art‑Nouveau style, the two‑car system uses electric motors and a haulage cable to pull passengers uphill while a brake system keeps them safe during descent. Recognised as a national monument in 2002, the Ascensor da Glória has been the subject of ongoing maintenance contracts, most recently awarded to the company MAIN in 2022, and regular safety inspections every two years.
