About

Igreja de São Roque, situated in Lisbon’s historic Bairro Alto quarter, is celebrated as the earliest Jesuit church in the Portuguese world and one of the first Jesuit churches globally. The edifice, completed in 1619, has endured the 1755 Lisbon earthquake largely unscathed and today remains a vital part of the Lisbon Holy House of Mercy, a heritage site that continues to serve the city. Architecturally, the church exemplifies the “auditorium‑church” style with a single wide nave, shallow apse, and understated exterior typical of Portugese plain style. Inside, a lavish Baroque interior boasts gilt‑woodwork, glazed tile façades, and a trompe‑l’œil painted ceiling that creates the illusion of a vaulted roof. The sanctuary is enriched by a series of chapels—most notably the 18th‑century Chapel of St. John the Baptist, a project by Nicola Salvi and Luigi Vanvitelli, and the Chapel of Our Lady of the Doctrine—each adorned with intricate sculptures and precious tiles. In addition to its religious functions, Igreja de São Roque houses the Museu de São Roque, a museum that displays the church’s artistic patrimony, including mosaics, paintings, and relics. Visitors can thus experience the blend of spiritual heritage and artistic treasure that makes the site a key cultural landmark in Lisbon.
