About

The Lisbon Metro, officially Metropolitano de Lisboa, is Portugal’s first rapid transit system and the city’s most convenient public transport network. Since its inauguration on 29 December 1959, the line has evolved from a modest Y‑shaped network to a comprehensive grid of 44.5 km serving 56 stations across Lisbon and its hinterlands. Four coloured lines – Blue, Yellow, Green and Red – are interlinked through key hub stations such as Restauradores, Saldanha and Oriente, providing frequent, 5‑ to 8‑minute headways from 6:30 a.m. every day until 1:00 a.m. The system’s architecture blends modern functionality with artistic flair; many stations feature public art installations, unique tile designs and spacious platforms that accommodate up to six‑car trains. Ticketing is flexible and fully integrated with Portugal’s national fare system. A single‑journey fare costs €1.85, while a day‑pass – the 24‑hour ticket – offers unlimited travel across all Carris, Metro and CP routes for €7.00. For multimodal itineraries that include CP services to Sintra, Cascais or the Trans‑Tajo (Cacilhas), the 24‑hour pass is available for €10.00 or €11.00. Pass holders may pay via contact‑less cards (Navegante or standard bank cards) or through the bus‑tram network. With its historic legacy, modern amenities and nationwide connectivity, the Lisbon Metro remains an essential gateway for locals and visitors alike, bringing the city’s vibrant culture, districts and sights closer together than ever before.
