Ponte 25 de Abril
About
The 25 de Abril Bridge is a striking suspension bridge that links Lisbon with the municipality of Almada across the Tagus River. Its main span of 1,013 m (3,323 ft) makes it the longest suspension span in continental Europe, and the bridge’s design draws inspiration from California’s famous Golden Gate and Bay Bridges. Originally opened on 6 August 1966 and initially named Ponte Salazar in honour of the former dictator, the bridge was renamed after the Carnation Revolution on 25 April 1974. The structure carries six lanes of road traffic on its upper deck and a double-track electrified railway on the lower deck, making it a critical transport artery for both commuters and tourists. The bridge is open 24 hours a day, and a small observation deck built in 2017 allows visitors to take in panoramic views of the city and river. A small toll of €2.15 applies to passenger cars travelling northbound (into Lisbon); there is no toll southbound. The bridge plays host to an annual half‑marathon, and its iconic orange paint and imposing towers make it a must‑see landmark on any Lisbon itinerary.
