About
Praça do Comércio, also known as Terreiro do Paço, is one of Lisbon’s largest and most iconic squares. Occupying a 175 m × 175 m area, it faces the Tagus River and was completely rebuilt in the classic Pombaline style after the 1755 earthquake. The plaza is home to the ceremonial equestrian statue of King José I and the grand Arco da Rua Augusta, which connects the square with the bustling Rua Augusta. Today it serves as a vibrant commercial hub, cultural landmark and transport nexus, surrounded by government offices, historic cafés such as Martinho da Arcada, and the Museum of Lisbon.
