About
The Santuario Nacional de Cristo Rei, also known as the Shrine of Christ the King, stands proudly on a cliff overlooking the Tagus River and the city of Lisbon. Inspired by Rio de Janeiro’s famous Christ the Redeemer, the 28‑metre marble statue was completed in 1959 and offers visitors a dramatic, panoramic vista of the capital. Beyond its imposing height, the shrine houses a tranquil chapel, a visitor centre, and an observation deck at 82 metres that rewards guests with sweeping views of the 25 de Abril Bridge and the Atlantic Ocean.
