About
The Gruta do Carvão, known locally as the Grotto of Coal, is a mesmerizing natural wonder on São Miguel Island in the Azores. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, the cave stretches over 1,650 metres (more than 5,400 feet) and boasts a dazzling array of stalactites, stalagmites, and other speleothems that shimmer against basaltic walls. Visitors can explore its three main sections—Rua de Lisboa, Rua do Paim, and Rua João do Rego—each offering a unique subterranean landscape that showcases the island’s geological history. Guided tours, available during the seasonal visiting period, provide insightful commentary on both the natural and historical significance of this region’s largest lava tube.
