About

The Clérigos Church (Igreja dos Clérigos) stands as one of Porto’s most iconic landmarks and a quintessential example of 18th‑century Baroque architecture. Designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, the church’s richly ornamented façade is adorned with garlands, shells and a distinctive broken pediment that echo Roman Baroque influences.  Its interior showcases an elliptical nave, a polychrome marble altarpiece, and a masterfully carved wooden choir loft. Dominating the city skyline is the church’s 75.6‑metre‑tall bell tower—known locally as the Torre dos Clérigos—completed almost a decade after the main building.  The tower contains 240 staircases that lead visitors to six observation platforms, offering sweeping views of the Ribeira and Douro River.  Together, the church and its tower illustrate how Italian artistic ideas were seamlessly adapted by Portuguese artisans, making Clérigos a vital piece of national heritage. Today, the Clérigos Church remains a vital cultural touchstone: it hosts regular concerts, spiritual services, and draws millions of visitors annually who come to admire its architectural splendor and the panoramic vistas from its summit.
