Livraria Lello, famously known as the “prettiest bookshop in the world,” opened its doors in 1906 and has since become a cultural landmark in Porto, Portugal. The historic building, designed by engineer Francisco Xavier Esteves, showcases a striking Neo‑Manueline facade that blends neo‑Gothic and Art Nouveau elements, creating an architecturally unique setting for literary explorers. Inside, visitors are greeted by the iconic wooden staircase that winds up the ceiling, the radiant stained‑glass window painted by Dutch master Samuel van Krieken, and abundant balconies lined with shelves of books. The shop’s interior is further enlivened by contemporary installations such as the “Face of Porto” and seasonal exhibitions that celebrate both Portuguese and international literature. Beyond its architectural splendor, Livraria Lello serves as an active platform for literary discourse. The foundation hosts regular exhibitions (e.g., “People in Motion”), monthly book suggestions (the Boundless series), and a curated collection known as Gemma, which houses rare editions, manuscripts, and luxury books. Regularly scheduled talks, book launches, and cultural events make the venue a vibrant hub for authors, readers, and scholars alike. To preserve the integrity of the experience, visitors must purchase a ticket voucher at check‑in, which grants them access to the shop for 90 minutes. The shop is open daily from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, except on public holidays such as New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, First of May, St. Peter and Paul’s day (June 24th), and Christmas Day. While the entry is paid, membership through the Amigo Card offers free access without queues, enhancing convenience for frequent visitors.
