About
It is connected to the Ribadouros family, to which Egas Moniz - king D. Afonso Henriques' famous tutor - belonged. In 1106, Egas Moniz donates half his fortune to the Monastery on the condition that he will be buried there. His tomb chest is one of the most beautiful pieces in Portuguese Romanesque sculpture. It depicts scenes from the governor and schoolmaster's life, like the time when he offered himself as a vassal in Toledo, his death and his funeral ceremonies. This Monastery is part of the Route of the Romanesque.
