About

Monte Crasto, located in S. Cosme, constitutes a natural fortress, fully deserving the Latin name of crasto (castle). It's an elevated place, with 194 meters of altitude and defended naturally by enormous boulders on which the chapel of Santo Isidoro rests. The name crasto is derived by metathesis from the Latin castrum. For the Romans, it meant castle or square, but later that name became widespread and also took on the meaning of a showy place, suitable for camps or fortifications. In Monte's terreiro there are lateral cruises dated 1757 and a central one dating from 1759.
