Palacio da Bolsa
About
Palácio da Bolsa, or the Stock Exchange Palace, is a stunning neoclassical landmark in Porto that marries elegant Palladian design with exotic interior themes. Constructed between 1842 and 1909, the building was commissioned by Porto’s Commercial Association after the ruins of a 13th‑century Franciscan convent were donated to the merchants of the city. Its grand central courtyard, known as the Nations’ Courtyard, is crowned by a magnificent metal‑and‑glass dome that reflects light across the polished floors, while the lavish Arab Room—complete with Moorish‑revival décor, intricate tilework, and a dramatic curtain—serves as the main reception hall for dignitaries. Visitors can wander through a series of opulent rooms—including the Golden Room, the Tribunal Room, and the Assembly Hall—each adorned with marble columns, carved ceilings, and richly painted frescoes that capture the civic pride of 19th‑century Porto. The palace, now a National Monument and UNESCO World Heritage site, continues to host cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions, offering a glimpse into Portugal’s historical commerce and artistic heritage.
