Castelo de Almourol
About
The Castle of Almourol is a striking medieval fortress perched on a rocky islet in the middle of Portugal’s Tagus River. This isolated structure, dating originally to the 12th‑century and rebuilt by the Knights Templar, offers visitors a glimpse into the country’s military past and a panoramic view of the riverine landscape. The castle’s granite walls and crenellated towers rise 18 metres above the water, and the complex is divided into an outer enclosure with a series of circular towers and an inner keep that houses the main gate and living quarters. Today, guests can explore the castle’s stone corridors, climb the tower for sweeping vistas, and learn about its 19th‑century restoration that restored the keeps and added decorative battlements. The only way to reach the site is a short, inexpensive boat ride across the Tagus, making the experience uniquely scenic and historically authentic.
