Moscheea Carol I
About
The Grand Mosque of Constanța, also known as Moscheea Carol I, is a striking example of early 20th‑century Muslim architecture in Romania. Constructed between 1910 and 1913 on the site of the former Mahmudia Mosque, it blends Neo‑Egyptian, Neo‑Byzantine and Neo‑Romanesque elements, featuring a 25‑metre‑high dome and a 47‑metre‑tall minaret. Designed by architect Victor Ștefănescu and built with reinforced concrete—making it the first reinforced‑concrete structure in Romania—the mosque is a historic monument and a notable landmark in Constanța. Visitors can admire the Arabic calligraphy, marble columns, and the interior mihrab that guide worshippers toward Mecca. As a cultural and religious site, it offers free entry to the public, and guided tours are occasionally available upon request.
