Transfagarasan Highway
About
The Transfagarasan Highway, officially known as DN 7C, is a legendary mountain pass that slices through the southern Carpathians of Romania. Stretching 151 km (94 mi) from the village of Bascov near Pitești to the crossroads with DN1 near Sibiu, it reaches a peak elevation of 2,042 m (6,699 ft) – the second highest paved road in the country after the Transalpina. Built between 1970 and 1974 as a strategic military route, the highway evolved into a symbol of engineering prowess and scenic beauty, drawing motorcyclists, cyclists, and adventure seekers from around the globe. Beyond its impressive engineering, the Transfagarasan is famed for its hairpin turns, long S‑shaped curves, and a series of five tunnels and viaducts that cut through the rugged terrain. Its most iconic sight is Bâlea Lake, a glacial alpine lake at 2,042 m that offers crystal‑clear waters and panoramic reflections of the sky, as well as the 884 m Bâlea Tunnel – the longest road tunnel in Romania. Near the highest point the road passes by Poenari Castle, the historic fortress once inhabited by Vlad the Impaler, blending history with breathtaking vistas. The highway is typically open from late May or early June until late October, with occasional late‑season extensions into November depending on weather conditions; during winter months the road is closed due to snowfall. For those planning a drive, summer months – especially July and early September – provide the most reliable and enjoyable experience, with clear skies, mild temperatures, and fully operational toll plazas and rest areas along the route.
