About
The Timisoara Orthodox Cathedral, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral, stands proudly on Bulevardul Regele Ferdinand I in the heart of Timisoara. Designed in the Neo‑Moldavian style that blends Renaissance, Ottoman and Byzantine motifs, the cathedral was built between 1936 and 1940 and consecrated in 1946. Its towering structure—11 intricate towers crowned by an 83‑metre‑high Pantocrator dome—makes it the second tallest church in Romania, surpassed only by Bucharest’s People’s Salvation Cathedral. Inside, a richly decorated iconostasis, over 7,000‑kilogram bells, and a vast museum of religious artifacts, including the relics of Saint Joseph the New, offer visitors a deep dive into Orthodox heritage and Banat’s spiritual legacy.
