Finzgar's Birth House - Museum
About
Finžgar’s birth house belongs to the best examples of vernacular architecture of the Gorenjska (Upper Carniola) region. It represents the rural architecture and lifestyle of poor farmers from the second half of the 19th century. The rooms in the main floor are preserved as they were in taht time: a small entrance area with a traditional black smoke kitchen, pantry, living room which served also as a workshop and matrimonial bedroom. Part of the homestead has been converted into a museum dedicated to the priest, writer, and playwright Fran Saleški Finžgar, who was born here in 1871. The homestead was reconstructed and opened as a museum in 1971. The basement rooms were re-arranged to host a permanent exhibition on Finžgar’s life and work, containing paintings, photographs, documents and books. In 2013 the basement exhibition was renovated and completed with some of the writer’s personal items.
