About

The Ljubljana Central Market (Osrednja Ljubljanska tržnica) is a bustling hub of local life located in the heart of Slovenia’s capital, spanning the area between the historic Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge on the right bank of the Ljubljanica River. Designed by the renowned architect Jože Plečnik between 1931 and 1939, the market’s two‑storey hall features elegant colonnades, large semi‑circular windows, and a covered bridge that connects the two halves of the complex. In 2021 its architectural significance was recognised by UNESCO when it was listed as part of Plečnik’s legacy on the World Heritage List. The market operates daily (except Sundays) with distinct seasonal schedules: during the summer months it opens from 6 AM to 6 PM on weekdays and 6 AM to 4 PM on Saturdays; in winter the hours are 6 AM to 4 PM from Monday through Saturday. Between April 1 and November 30, weekends and public holidays see extended opening times from 9 AM to 6 PM, while the holiday season from December 1 to 31 extends the day’s activities from 9 AM to midnight. Inside, visitors can explore a wide array of stalls offering fresh flowers, fish, dried fruit, bakery goods, dairy products, and meats, as well as artisans selling crafts and spices. The colonnaded west side – the “Steberna Lopa” – provides shelter and supports a vendors’ market that is open from 6 AM through the late afternoon based on seasonal changes. Entry to the market is free of charge, making it an accessible destination for locals and tourists alike. For information on stalls, reservations or other services, the market’s public service office can be reached at 01 300 12 00 or via email at info@lpt.si.
