Preseren Square
About
Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg) is Ljubljana’s vibrant civic hub, sitting at the heart of the Old Town’s pedestrian zone. Designed in the late 1980s by Edvard Ravnikar, the square replaced a funnel‑shaped layout with a smooth circular plaza, creating a welcoming, traffic‑free space for locals and tourists alike. It serves as the epicenter of city life, hosting festivals, concerts, political rallies, and the world‑famous Ljubljana Dragon Carnival. The square is framed by historic Secessionist buildings such as Urbanc House, the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, and the Central Pharmacy, all of which add architectural charm and a sense of continuity to the modern public space. Visitors can stroll around the broad granite pavement, enjoy the tranquil birch‑lined Pedestal of France Prešeren, and explore the lively cafés and shops surrounding the square.
