About

The Pulpí Geode is a monumental gypsum crystal formation located in the Pilar de Jaravía mine near the town of Pulpí in Almería, Spain. Discovered in 1999, it holds the title of one of the world’s largest documented geodes, occupying a cavernous 10.7 cubic meters (380 cu ft) and reaching 8 m in width, 1.8 m in depth, and 1.7 m in height. Its interior is lined with pristine selenite crystals that can grow up to 2 m long, a breathtaking display that attracts geotourists from around the globe. The geode sits half a kilometer below the surface, making its exploration a unique adventure for geology enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. The site, now declared a geo‑heritage location, offers guided tours that allow the public to witness this natural wonder up close while learning about its geological formation, which dates back roughly 60,000 years. Despite minor vandal damage in 2021, the geode remains a testament to Earth’s mineral diversity and is considered a must‑visit for those fascinated by natural history and spectacular mineral formations.
