El Caminito del Rey
About
El Caminito del Rey, also known as "The King's Little Path", is a historic narrow walkway snaking along the steep cliffs of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes in the province of Málaga, southern Spain. Originally built in the early 20th century to aid workers at local hydroelectric plants, the trail fell into disrepair by the early 21st century, closing for over a decade after a series of accidents. After four years of extensive renovation, the path was safely reopened in March 2015, earning a place on Lonely Planet’s list of world‑class attractions. Today it spans 2.9 km of steel‑lined walkways and suspended bridges, offering visitors a thrilling plunge into Andalusia’s dramatic limestone gorges. Today the Caminito is more than a simple hiking trail – it is a carefully managed visitor destination combining adventure, history and environmental stewardship. Tickets can be bought online or at the northern access gate, with a range of options to suit different needs: a standard 10 € admission for solo walkers, an 18 € guided tour for groups of up to 30, a 2.5 € shuttle bus that carries visitors between El Chorro and the northern corner, and a 2 € parking fee for those who arrive by car. Access is reserved for visitors aged 8 years and older, and must be accompanied by valid ID. The Caminito offers more than a breathtaking walk. Visitors can also explore nearby natural and cultural sites, including the historic Agua Chorro reservoir, the Gaitanes waterfalls, and prehistoric caves such as Ardales and Necrópolis de Las Aguilillas. The route is fully sign‑posted, with safety measures in place, and is run by the Andalusian government in partnership with local authorities, ensuring a secure and unforgettable experience for families, history enthusiasts and adrenaline fans alike.
