Real Monasterio de Santa Clara
About
Real Monasterio de Santa Clara is a historic monument located in the town of Tordesillas in Castile and León, Spain. Originally commissioned by King Alfonso XI as a royal palace in 1344, the building later became a convent under the daughters of Peter the Cruel, preserving its majestic façade, intimate patio, fragrant baths, and a charming chapel. The site exemplifies Mudéjar craftsmanship, most notably through a finely carved Mudéjar doorway that blends Christian and Islamic design motifs. Historically, it served as a refuge for Queen Joanna of Castile during her years of imprisonment before her death. Today the monastery is managed by Spain’s Patrimonio Nacional and welcomes visitors to explore its intriguing rooms and architectural legacy.
