Casa Vicens Gaudi
About
Casa Vicens, Antoni Gaudí’s first surviving house, is an early masterpiece that heralded his distinctive spirit of modernism. Located at Carrer de les Carolines in Barcelona, the building is renowned for its vibrant use of color, intricate masonry and an eclectic mix of influences – from Islamic and Mudéjar motifs to Neo-Gothic detailing. The house was constructed between 1883 and 1885 as a summer home for the Vicens family and remains affectionately known as “la primera casa de Gaudí.” Visitors can experience Casa Vicens in a variety of ways. A self‑guided tour allows guests to explore the five floors and lush gardens at their own pace, whilst guided visits offer expert commentary in multiple languages for up to 12 people. For a more relaxed experience, the “Sweet Gaudí” option includes a warm chocolate‑churro treat served in the welcoming café. Early‑morning access provides a quiet window for photography enthusiasts to capture the sunrise glow over the stonework. Audio guides are available free of charge in 16 languages, making the experience accessible to all. The garden, a peaceful oasis that predates the house, stretches out behind the building and includes unique plantings that reflect early 19th‑century design principles. The roof terrace offers a panoramic view of Barcelona, while historically significant rooms such as the main living area and the private quarters reveal the private life of the Vicens family. Casa Vicens, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, remains an essential stop for architecture lovers, families, and history enthusiasts alike.
