Port Vell Barcelone
About
Port Vell, meaning “Old Harbour”, is Barcelona’s waterfront heart where history meets contemporary leisure. Attracting approximately 16 million visitors annually, the area hosts the iconic Maremàgnum complex—a mall with shops, a multiplex cinema, bars, restaurants, and the IMAX Port Vell cinema—alongside Europe’s largest aquarium, home to 8,000 fish and 11 sharks across 22 tanks. A wide pedestrian promenade, Rambla de Mar, links the harbour to the famous La Rambla, and a swing bridge lets ships glide beneath, offering a vibrant tableau of maritime traffic. The old customs building, now a cultural landmark, shelters a replica of Christopher Columbus’s Santa María and the historic port walls, reminding visitors of Barcelona’s rich seafaring past. Port Vell is also a hub for cruise ships, yacht marinas, and the “Golondrines” sightseeing boats that circle the harbour. Whether strolling along the waterfront, marveling at the aquarium’s marine life, or dining in one of the many restaurants, visitors experience a dynamic blend of heritage, entertainment and modern architecture in one of the city’s most vibrant districts.
