About

Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari is a magnificent Catholic church located in the historic centre of Burgos, Spain. Built in 1408 to replace an earlier Romanesque temple, the church is famed for its monumental limestone altarpiece, the largest of its kind in Castile and the only stone retable of the late medieval period to survive. The altarpiece, measuring 15.55 by 9.04 metres, was crafted by the renowned workshop of Simón and Francisco de Colonia and showcases exquisite Renaissance craftsmanship in stone. The interior also features Gothic tombs, a Renaissance arch dedicated to María Sáez de Oña, and a collection of artistic artefacts donated by the merchant Gonzalo López de Polanco. Declared a National Monument in 1917, the church offers visitors a unique glimpse into Burgos’ rich religious and artistic heritage, making it a must‑visit site for history lovers, art enthusiasts, and families exploring the region.
