Naveta des Tudons
About
Naveta d'Es Tudons is a stunning pre‑historic burial chamber that stands as the largest and best‑preserved naveta on the Balearic island of Menorca. Tucked in a sloping valley just 3 miles from the town of Ciutadella, the monument mirrors an upside‑down boat, with a carved limestone façade and a roof of horizontal slabs. Its lower chamber once held the bones of over a hundred individuals, while the upper chamber was used for drying newly buried bodies. The naveta was excavated in 1959–1960 and restored to its original form, protecting it with a modern dry‑stone wall. Today visitors can admire the exterior grandeur and learn about its archaeological context, but the interior remains closed to preserve the fragile remains. Visiting Naveta d'Es Tudons offers a rare glimpse into Menorca’s pre‑historic past and the ingenious megalithic architecture of the Menorquí culture.
