About

The Castle of Sohail, perched on a small hill overlooking the mouth of the Fuengirola River, is one of the most evocative landmarks on the Costa del Sol. Today it is open to the public at no cost, offering a unique opportunity to step back into the layers of history that have shaped the region—from Punic and Roman settlements to the Moorish fortress of the 10th and 11th centuries, and finally the Christian occupation in 1485. Visitors can stroll along the medieval walls, admire the original stonework, and explore the areas that once housed a small castle and later served as a cultural venue for festivals such as the annual Marenostrum. Inside the castle, the ruins tell a story of architectural adaptation: a fortified gate, a circular tower, and remnants of a defensive wall that once provided security for the fishing community. The site’s strategic position afforded control over the surrounding landscape and maritime trade routes, making it a key point in Fuengirola’s ancient past. In recent years, the municipality has undertaken conservation work to stabilize the structure and preserve its archaeological value. The site is accessible every day (closed only on Mondays). From Tuesday to Friday it opens from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, while Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays welcome visitors from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The surroundings also include the nearby Roman archaeological sites, which are also free to enter and provide a broader view of the region’s rich past. The Castle of Sohail remains a must-visit destination for those interested in history, architecture, and the authentic charm of southern Spain.
