About

The building that we see today of the Insigne Collegiate Church of Gandia is a building that dates back to the year 1400. Linked to the Borja family, Francisco de Borja y Aragón, IV Duke of Gandia, III General Purpose of the Society of Jesus, received Baptism. declared a saint by the Catholic Church, and designated patron of the ducal city. In 1931 it was declared a National Monument, and in 1936 the Gandía City Council of that time decreed that it be demolished, destroying the High Altar (today completely disappeared), and making all its works of art disappear. Up to three times it suffered various sieges and fires. Saving the building, little by little part of the lost heritage has been recovered, although practically all the altars, ornaments and sculptures are new. Visiting the Collegiate Church is to delve into the fascinating history of Gandía and the Borja family, discovering the place where Saint Francis of Borja was baptized.
