Elogio Del Horizonte
About
The Elogio del Horizonte (Eulogy of the Horizon) is a monumental concrete sculpture perched on the cliffs of Cerro de Santa Catalina in Gijón, Spain. Standing 10 meters tall, 15.5 meters long, and weighing 500 tonnes, the work of Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida has become an iconic symbol of the city since its inauguration on 9 June 1990. The sculpture’s imposing form, crafted from poured concrete, offers visitors panoramic vistas of the Cantabrian Sea and a striking visual contrast against the coastal landscape. Beyond its architectural daring, the piece has earned both admiration and criticism, earning the nickname “King Kong’s toilet” in its early days. Despite the cost debate and initial controversies, the Elogio remains a celebrated landmark that draws artistic connoisseurs and casual tourists alike, rendering it a must-see destination for any Gijón itinerary.
