Mirador del Rio
About
Mirador del Río is a striking viewpoint perched on a 475‑metre‑high cliff (1,560 ft) in the Batería del Río area of Lanzarote. Designed and built between 1971 and 1973 by artist César Manrique, the structure blends seamlessly with the volcanic landscape, featuring a balustraded café, a souvenir shop, and a glass‑lined viewing platform. Visitors pass through a winding corridor that opens onto two vaulted rooms with expansive glass windows – the "eyes of the Mirador" – offering sweeping panoramas of the Strait of El Río, La Graciosa, and on clear days even the small islands of Montaña Clara, Roque del Oeste, and Alegranza. The viewpoint provides an unrivaled perspective of the Chinijo Archipelago and showcases Manrique’s signature fusion of art and nature, making it a must‑visit destination for architecture lovers, history enthusiasts, and anyone seeking dramatic island vistas.
