El Drago Milenario
About
The El Drago Milenario is a colossal dragon tree located in the Parque del Drago in Icod de los Vinos on Tenerife, the largest and oldest known specimen of Dracaena draco. The oak‑shaped canopy spans about 20‑21 m and the trunk, with a 6‑m‑high cavity, can be entered through a door that leads to a ventilated chamber. Declared a national monument in 1917, the tree stands as a living monument to the islands’ natural history and a symbol of Icod de los Vinos, appearing on the town’s coat of arms and the historic 1 000‑peseta banknote. The surrounding park, designed in the 1990s, showcases endemic Canary flora and offers walking paths, bridges, and a small cave adorned with a Guanche burial. Visitors can admire the tree free of charge from the nearby town square, or purchase an entrance ticket to stroll through the park’s gardens and explore the tree’s interior, making it a must‑visit destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
