About

The Refugio de Altavista is the lone mountain refuge in the Teide National Park, perched at 2,000 m on the slopes of the world’s tallest volcano. Founded in 1892 and completely renovated in 2007, the refuge provides a picturesque resting point for hikers, a rustic kitchen, common dormitories for up to 54 guests, and a small infirmary. Unfortunately, the refuge is currently closed and no reopening date has been announced; visitors wishing to stay overnight must wait until the facilities reopen. Despite the closure, the surrounding area remains a popular access point for the Teide summit. Hikers can book guided excursions or the Teleférico lift from the refuge’s footpath, with travel time of roughly five and a half hours from the base to the summit and back. These tours include transport from the northern or southern sides of Tenerife, a licensed guide, and the required tickets to the crater. For reservation or general inquiries, travelers are encouraged to contact the Volcano Teide team via email at info@volcanoteide.com. The refuge lies on Tf‑21, Km 40, 2 in the heart of the park, accessible from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and serviced by the Teleférico station at the park’s base. The site’s unique panoramic views and star‑watching conditions make it a highlight for photographers and nature lovers, even while it remains temporarily out of service.
