Real Monasterio De Santa Maria de Guadalupe
About
The Royal Monastery of Saint Mary of Guadalupe, located in the town of Guadalupe in the Extremadura region of Spain, stands as a testament to nearly seven centuries of spiritual devotion and architectural evolution. Founded in the late 13th century after a shepherd discovered a hidden statue of the Virgin Mary along the Guadalupe River, the monastery grew into a royal sanctuary under the patronage of monarchs such as Alfonso XI and Ferdinand II. Today it houses a blend of Mudéjar, Gothic, and Baroque elements, reflecting the various phases of construction that spanned the 14th to 18th centuries. Its complex includes the magnificent main basilica (Templo Mayor), an imposing Mudéjar cloister with a carved plateresque portal, a later Gothic cloister, and a Baroque chapel richly adorned with frescoes and stucco. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, the monastery draws pilgrims, art historians, and casual visitors alike to experience its spiritual ambiance and architectural splendor.
