About

The Cathedral of San María La Real de La Almudena sits in the heart of Madrid, just steps from the Royal Palace. Its Neo‑Gothic façade, inspired by French Gothic cathedrals, houses a magnificent interior of ribbed vaults, stained‑glass windows and an impressive marble altar. The building was conceived in the late 19th century, began construction in 1868 by royal decree, and was finally consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993 after more than a century of work. Visitors can explore the cathedral’s rich history, its intricate chapels, and the richly decorated crypt that houses relics and artworks from various periods. A donation of €1 per person is requested at the entrance, but it remains free to enter for those wishing only to admire the architecture and spiritual atmosphere. The cathedral is wheelchair‑accessible via a broad ramp with a 7 % gradient and no handrails. Masses and other religious services are available throughout the week, and visitors may book a Mass by telephone. Guided tours are not offered inside the cathedral itself, but the adjoining Cathedral Museum provides in‑depth exhibitions on its art and history. Opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 8:30 pm (9:00 pm during July and August), and the cathedral remains a popular destination for both pilgrims and tourists alike.
