About

Castillo de Colomares is a striking monument perched on the hills overlooking Benalmádena, in the Costa del Sol region of Andalusia, Spain. Designed as a tribute to Christopher Columbus, the structure covers an area of 1,500 m² and boasts the world’s largest monument dedicated to the famed explorer, as well as the smallest church in the world – a 1.96 m² chapel nested within the castle. The castle’s architecture is a blend of medieval and Moorish influences, with a distinctive 16‑turbine silhouette and intricate stonework that narrate Columbus’s voyages. Visitors can marvel at the representations of his three vessels – the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa María – each positioned to highlight their respective roles in the historic journey. Inside, a small oratory and a bell commemorate the island of San Salvador, while the carved stone walls recount the saga of discovery and the dedication of the monument’s creator, Dr. Esteban Martín. Beyond the rotating exhibitions, the site offers guided tours, cultural events, and organized group activities such as book presentations, medieval markets, and musical performances. Visitors are encouraged to explore the exterior exhibits at their leisure, fully enjoying the panoramic views over the Mediterranean and the thoughtfully curated displays that bring Columbus’s legacy to life.
