The castle of Montsoriu, located in the eastern sector of the Montseny Natural Park and Reserve of the Biosphere, is one of the most relevant examples of medieval military architecture in the Mediterranean region, and it is considered the best Gothic castle in Catalonia. Archaeological and reconstruction work begun at the end of the 20th century has made possible the recovery of a considerable part of the splendor of a castle with over 1,000 years of history, that was described in the 13th century by royal chronicler Bernat Desclot as one of the most beautiful and noble castles in the world. In the mid-14th century viscount Bernat II of Cabrera, admiral and counselor of King Pere III el Cerimonios, transformed Montsoriu castle into a magnificent and completely unassailable Gothic castle palace.
