About

The Castillo de Belmonte stands proudly on the hill of San Cristobal overlooking the village of Belmonte in the province of Cuenca, Castilla‑La Mancha. First built in 1456 as a defensive fortress by Don Juan Pacheco, the structure was left unfinished after his death and remained largely abandoned until the 19th‑century restoration led by Empress Eugenia de Montijo, who invested more than 500,000 pesetas to revive its medieval character. The castle later served as a Dominican monastery, a prison, and a youth academy before finally being declared a cultural monument in 1931. After further restoration work in the summer of 2010, it was opened to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich history, striking architecture, and the layers of its past incarnations.
