La Fageda d'en Jorda
About
La Fageda d'en Jordà, also known as the Jordà Beech Forest, is a stunning natural reserve located in the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone of Catalonia, Spain. Covering roughly 4.8 km², this unique forest thrives on fertile volcanic soil and is set between 550 and 650 m above sea level—a rare altitude for a beech grove in the Mediterranean region. The forest floor is dotted with striking volcanic spatter cones, locally called *tossols*, some reaching over 20 m tall. The site is steeped in cultural history as well. Catalan poet Joan Maragall wrote a celebrated poem about the forest, and a monolith honouring him sits at the main entrance. Within the reserve lies the historic Can Jordà farmhouse, now a plant‑conservation centre dedicated to preserving fruit species that are endangered or in decline. Guest experience is designed for nature lovers and hikers: visitors can stroll along a network of marked walking routes, explore the forest’s diverse flora, and even rent a horse or an old wooden carriage for a unique excursion. Motor vehicles are prohibited inside the forest, ensuring a tranquil environment for exploring the landscape. La Fageda d'en Jordà is part of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, surrounded by 21 volcanoes of the Garrotxa region. It serves both as a haven for wildlife and a living laboratory for conservation and agricultural practices, offering a tranquil, educational, and memorable day trip for anyone interested in natural beauty and ecological stewardship.
