Penafiel Castle
About
The Castle of Peñafiel (Castillo de Peñafiel) dominates the hilltop of the town of Peñafiel in the province of Valladolid, offering sweeping views of the Duero, Duratón, and Botijas valleys. Built in stages from the 9th century, the castle’s imposing keep rises 34 m above the surrounding landscape. Over the centuries, it has seen the construction of three interior courtyards, two of which now host the Provincial Wine Museum, where visitors can explore the region’s rich oenological heritage. Walkers through the castle’s storied walls can trace the evolution of Spanish fortifications, from its original Arab defensive outpost to the medieval expansions of Sancho Garcia and the later additions of Infante Don Juan Manuel. Inside, the vaulted halls echo with the history of the noble families that once guarded the kingdom, while the wine exhibits showcase the five Denominations of Origin that define the local terroir. Open to the public Tuesday to Sunday, the castle offers two daily time windows: 10:30 am‑2:00 pm and 4:00 pm‑8:00 pm during the high season (April–September), and 4:00 pm‑6:00 pm in the low season (October–March). Monday visits are closed, and visitors are encouraged to arrive at least forty minutes before closing for a full experience.
