Museo de Las Salinas del Carmen
About
El Museo de las Salinas del Carmen is the only salt flats still in operation on the island of Fuerteventura. Covering 26,100 square metres, the site features ten salt pans and nearly 1,000 pits that illustrate the traditional salt‑making process. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local heritage by stepping into the role of a salt worker for a day, learning about the extraction of sea‑foam salt and the daily beating ritual that yields a fine white grain rich in trace minerals. The museum itself is integrated within the salt‑making complex, showcasing the salt storage, the house of the salt worker and the remains of the old dock. Together, they reveal centuries of history and showcase the cultural importance of salt to the island’s economy and gastronomy.
