About

Lac des Bouillouses is a protected high‑mountain site at the foot of the Carlit massif, one of the largest lakes in the French Pyrenees. The reservoir, formed by a 20‑metre dam built between 1903 and 1910, is surrounded by wetlands, ponds and rivers that support a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Integrated into the Natura 2000 network, the area offers 60 km of marked trails that weave through meadows, woodlands and the surrounding mountain scenery. Whether you’re an avid hiker, a wildlife enthusiast, or simply seeking panoramic mountain views, the site caters to all ages and interests. From the summit of the Carlit massif visitors can enjoy sweeping vistas over the lake and surrounding Pyrenean peaks, while the wetlands provide habitats for rare bird species. Round‑the‑clock access is available via public transport, private vehicles, or a bus‑télé‑lift combination, especially during the summer season when shuttle services operate from Font‑Romeu and nearby towns.
