About

The Walls of Tarragona, or Muralla de Tarragona, are the remarkably preserved stone fortifications that once encircled the Roman city of Tarraco. Constructed between 217 BC and 197 BC, the walls reach heights of up to six metres and are built from stone blocks 4½ metres thick, showcasing Roman engineering brilliance. The defensive perimeter includes three surviving towers— the Bishop, the Caviscol, and the Minerva—each offering sweeping views of the city and a tangible link back to history. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarragona, the walls are a popular destination for history enthusiasts, families, and architectural lovers alike, allowing visitors to stroll along the preserved stretches and absorb the rich layers of Tarragona’s past.
