Museu Nacional Arqueologic de Tarragona
About
The National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona (MNAT) is the oldest and most comprehensive museum of Roman and early Christian archaeology in Catalonia. Housed in the historic Plaza del Rei, the MNAT preserves and interprets the rich heritage of the ancient city of Tarraco, once the capital of Hispania Tarraconensis. The museum’s collections span from the 16th to the 18th century, with layers of displays that illustrate the process of Romanisation in the Iberian Peninsula. MNAT oversees several heritage sites across the Tarragona province, including the well‑known Necrópolis de Tàrraco, the Roman Villa of the Munts, the Roman complex of Centcelles, the Theatre of Tarragona, the Museum Arqueològic de Tàrraco, the Arc de Berà and the Torre dels Escipions. Many of these sites are currently undergoing restoration; meanwhile, the museum showcases rotating exhibitions and the famous "Tiquet MNAT" combined ticket that provides access to three centres for a reduced price of €7. The museum also operates a specialised library, an extensive photographic archive of over 50,000 images, and a dynamic research programme focused on Tarraco’s Roman history. Guided tours, family‑friendly activities, and special events are regularly scheduled, and visitors are encouraged to book online for timed entries or guided visits. The museum remains a vital hub for cultural heritage, research, and community engagement in Catalonia, offering visitors a deep dive into the daily life, art, and architecture of the ancient Iberian world.
