About
Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, commonly known as the Royal Site of San Lorenzo, is a monumental complex perched on the slopes of the Sierra de Guadarrama north of Madrid. Founded in the 16th century by King Philip II, it encompasses a monastery, a basilica, a royal palace, a pantheon, a library, a museum and a university. The site, a UNESCO World Heritage, is Spain’s largest Renaissance building, renowned for its austere Herrerian architecture, the vast Library of knowledge, and the rich art collection that includes works by Titian, Velázquez and El Greco.
