The Cave of El Castillo (Cueva del Castillo) is a spectacular archaeological and artistic site located in the municipality of Puente Viesgo, Cantabria, Spain. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985, it is part of the larger Cave Complex of Monte Castillo and showcases one of the world’s most extensive collections of Paleolithic cave art, with paintings that date back more than 40 000 years. Archaeologists have identified 17 distinct stratigraphic layers within the cave, spanning from the Lower Paleolithic to the Bronze Age. Visitors can explore carefully curated displays that explain the prehistoric context and the cultural significance of the art and artifacts found in the space.
