About

The Botafumeiro is the iconic thurible of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, a centerpiece of the most renowned pilgrimage site in the world. Crafted in 1851 by the goldsmith José Losada and plated with a thin layer of silver, the enormous censer—over 1.90 meters tall and weighing 80 kilograms—can swing up to a 65-meter arc, reaching speeds of 80 km/h and filling the transept with thick clouds of incense. Every year, the Botafumeiro is used on a select list of solemn dates, including the Feast of Saint James, Lent, and major holidays, creating a spectacular, ethereal light show for pilgrims and visitors. The thurible’s operation requires a dedicated team of eight red-robed tiraboleiros who pull the ropes attached to a pulley mechanism that hangs 20 meters above the church floor. The ceremony is a centuries‑old tradition that dates back to the 12th century and is a highlight of the pilgrimage year, drawing thousands of people to witness the gigantic swinging motion and the fragrant smoke that fills the cathedral. For a special private experience, the cathedral offers a “performance” of the Botafumeiro for an approximate fee of €450, which allows invited guests to watch the thurible’s dramatic motion up close. Regular visitors, however, can enjoy the Botafumeiro as part of the cathedral’s daily worship and special events without any admission fee.
