Palacio Real de la Granja de San Ildefonso
About
The Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso, located just north of Madrid, is an 18th‑century Baroque palace that served as the summer residence of Spanish monarchs from the 1720s. The palace was conceived in the style of Versailles, featuring a grand central courtyard, richly decorated rooms, and a spectacular marble cloister. The surrounding gardens span 360 acres of formal French‑style landscaping, complete with 26 sculptural fountains, terraced lawns, and ornamental water features. Visitors walk through the palace’s elegant halls that house tapestries, crystal chandeliers, and antique furniture, and then explore the vast gardens, including the iconic “Fame” fountain and the water pool “El Mar.” The site offers an immersive experience of Spain’s royal heritage and 18th‑century landscape design.
