Plaza Nueva
About
Plaza Nueva is the vibrant heart of Seville’s historic centre, surrounded by iconic architecture, lush gardens, and a lively mix of locals and tourists. Originally a cemetery and orchard in the twelfth century, the site was transformed into a grand, open square in the 1850s, culminating in the construction of the city hall (Casa Consistorial de Sevilla) that fronts the plaza. The square’s layout, with its tree‑lined walkways and colourful flower beds, offers a peaceful respite amid the city's bustling streets. In the centre stands the equestrian statue of Ferdinand III, a monument added in 1924 to commemorate the king who reconquered Seville in 1248. Visitors can also explore the recently restored San Onofre chapel and admire the refined Baroque façade of the Telefónica building, creating a unique blend of civic pride and natural beauty.
